Fungi

Fungus (singular) / fungi (plural) are not plants.

You need to know the following characteristics if Fungi:

  • Fungi come in different shapes and sizes.
  • Some fungi can be very small and can be seen only under a microscope.
  • Fungi cannot make food. They get their food (absorb the nutrients) from other food or living thing, dead or alive.
  • Fungi reproduce by spores.
  • Fungi can be useful (example, yeast for making bread) or harmful to us (example, mould on bread when it turns bad).

Mushroom are fungi too but they are large enough to be seen without a microscope. Different kinds of mushroom grow in different places. Some mushroom can be eaten but some are poisonous.
