Diversity of Living Things (Term 1)

WS 1 [Page 13]

WS 2 [Page 15]

Our ideas about the needs of living things are:
Living things need food, air and water.

WS 3 [Page 16]

What can I conclude about living things?
- Living thing needs air, food and water.
- Living thing can grow / die.
- Living thing can reproduce.
- Living thing responds to changes.

[Page 17]

1. What is a Living Thing?
  • Living thing are things which needs air, food and water.
  • Things that can reproduce.
  • Things that responds to changes.
  • Things that grow / die.

2. Give 3 examples of Living things.
  • plant
  • cat
  • dog

3. What is a Non-living thing?
  • Non-living things are things that are not alive.
  • Non-living things do not respond to changes; do not need air, food and water; do not grow

4. Give 3 examples of Non-living things.
  • rock
  • dead animal
  • bones

5. What does living-thing need to survive?
  • Living things need food, water and air.

WS 4 [Page26]

Classification Chart

Some characteristics that plants usually have but animals may not have:

  • Plants can make its own food.
  • Plants  cannot move freely so they cannot look for food.
Some characteristics that animals usually have but plants may not have:

  • Animals cannot make its own food.
  • Animals can move freely to hunt or look for food

WS 5 [Page 29]

1. From the report, give 2 reasons why "Bacteria" and "Fungi" are living things.

a) Both Bacteria and Fungi need air and food to stay alive.

b) Both Bacteria and Fungi can reproduce.

Review Exercise

Section A:

Q1. Answer: 2
The spoon and key are non-living things because they do not have the characteristics of a living thing. Thus, they do not need air, food and water. They cannot respond.
They cannot grow or reproduce.

So, only group B (which consists of a snake and fern) needs air, food and water to live.

Q2. Answer: 3
Based on the graph shown, the height of the plant grew from week 1 to week 2 but remains constant (height of plant remains the same) from week 2 to week 4.

Thus, Mary can conclude that the height of plant increases from week 1 to week 2

The answer cannot be "1" because the height of plant did not grow taller every week.

The answer cannot be "2" because the height of the plant did not grow any taller in week 3 as compared to week 2.

The answer is not "4" because the height did not remain the same from week 1 to week 4.

Section B:

Q3.
(a) Group Q
(b) Elephant is a mammal. It gives birth to young alive so we can classify (group) the elephant in Group Q

Q4.

A - has 6 legs
B - has more than 6 legs

Q5.
(a) Kumar observed the number of Animal P increases over 4 months.
(b) Kumar can conclude that Animal P can reproduce.

Sample Question 1 [Page 47]
(a) X: Living things     ;       Y: Non-living things(b) Group B

Sample Question 2 [Page 48]
(a) Animal C and D
(b) Animal D lays eggs, has feathers and can fly.
(c) Animal C lays eggs but Animal A does not.
(d) Animal C.

Sample Question 3 [Page 49]
Group A: Bacteria
Group B Mushroom
Group C: Bird's nest fernGroup D: Dog

Sample Question 4 [Page 50]
(a) Fungi
(b) (i) False - Mushroom is classified under Fungi group where as the fern is classified under plants. Thus, only fern is classified as a non-flowering plant.
(ii) True - Fern is a non-flowering plant. Plants can make its own food due to the green substance called chlorophyll which helps the plant to make food.
(iii) False - Based on the statement shown, yes...the mushroom reproduces by spores but the second statement is incorrect. The fern is a non-flowering plant. Non-flowering plant reproduce by spores too. Only flowering plant reproduce by seeds.

Sample Question 5 [Page 51]
(a) Container A has fruit flies while container C does not.
Container A has a glass cover while container C does not.
(b) Lizard in container A will die first. It is because the glass cover does not allow air to go into the container.
(c) Based on this experiment, it shows that living things need air to survive.

Sample Question 6 [Page 52]
(a) Jar A and Jar D
(b) Grasshopper in Jar D will live the longest. Air and water are present for the grasshopper. Jar C and B has a lid without holes. Thus, it does not allow air to go into the jar and the grasshopper in those two jars will die first because they do not have air. The grasshopper in Jar A will survive for a few days because it was not given water.
